Welcome to phys 1114: Basic physics

This course is taught at the grade 11 level. It is an introduction to the following topics:

  • Forces and vectors, unit vectors, components
  • Motion (kinematics): displacement, position, speed, acceleration.
  • Newton's Laws of motion
  • Linear momentum.
  • Energy (mechanical energy, work, work-energy theorem)
  • Buoyancy, pressure (hydrostatics)
  • Electricity (DC circuits, including non ideal batteries)
  • Waves (sound and music)
  • Optics (thin lenses)

It prepares you to take PHYS 1118.

The notations used in this course are similar to the ones used in PHYS 1118 and PHYS 1125.
